Maldivia 45 High-Speed Ferry Saves European Operators €1.2 Million in Fuel per Year and Pays for Itself in Under Six Months
Aktualisiert: 29. Sept.
Up to 70% lower fuel consumption. Three carbon-composite vessels in production, first sea trials in October 2026.
Polis, Cyprus, 27. September 2026. With diesel prices across the European Union up by more than a third in a year, fuel has become the single largest cost pressure for ferry operators. The Maldivia 45 (M45), a 14.78-metre high-speed passenger ferry built from carbon and glass-fibre epoxy prepreg composites, addresses that pressure directly. Built around one principle, weight is cost, it is designed to reduce fuel consumption by 40 to 70% compared with conventional vessels of its class.

€1.2 million in annual fuel savings
In its most efficient diesel configuration, the M45 is designed to burn 72 litres per hour at 30 knots. A best-selling 48-foot competitor consumes roughly 360 litres per hour at similar speed. Based on 2,000 operating hours per year and the current EU average diesel price of €2.08 per litre, this difference represents calculated savings of approximately €1.2 million per vessel per year. At that rate, the fuel savings alone recover the vessel's purchase price in under six months.
For operators moving to zero-emission service, the all-electric M45 is projected to run for around €153,000 per year at European electricity prices, compared with roughly €1.5 million in annual fuel costs for the conventional competitor.
These savings come from the structure itself. Where comparable ferries weigh 21 tonnes or more fully loaded, the M45 is designed to operate at 10 to 13 tonnes. The first carbon hull came out of the mould at just 857 kilograms, 100 kilograms under its target weight.

Platform strategy: Customised superstructure is possible More routes, more revenue
Low weight also keeps draft below 0.90 metres, allowing operators to serve shallow harbours, island approaches and inland waterways that heavier vessels cannot reach. A 1,200-litre tank provides a range of 300 nautical miles at full load, reducing refuelling stops on longer routes. The M45 is designed to reach 44 knots in its V12 configuration and is available with petrol, diesel, electric, LNG or hydrogen propulsion.
Flexible layouts for every business model
The vessel carries up to 55 passengers across eight reconfigurable interior layouts, from high-density commuter seating to VIP touring. For premium services, the M45 can be fitted with luxury business class seats, giving operators a high-margin offering for executive transfers and upscale tourism routes. Standard features include panoramic reflective glazing, dual-redundant CTM Marine air conditioning and a spacious washroom.

8 layouts, 6 drive systems (electric, petrol, diesel as in- and outboard)
Built for a long working life
The structure is FEM-validated and the hull is CFD-optimised. Each vessel is DNV or CE classified, epoxy-built for zero osmosis, and finished with protective rubber bumpers and ALEXSEAL polyurethane paint to keep maintenance costs low over years of commercial service.

Structural engineering ensures high strength in the areas where it is required, as well as customized lamination plans Three vessels in production, sea trials in October
Three Maldivia 45 vessels are now in production at Maldivia Shipyard, each at a different stage of construction. Hull No. 1 will begin sea trials in October 2026.

"The Maldivia 45 is the rare boat that wins on a spreadsheet and on the water," said Hans Genthe, spokesperson for AEOMAR. "European operators are under real cost pressure right now, and this vessel answers it every day, in fuel not burned, in new routes within reach, and in passengers who want to ride again. With three boats in production and sea trials starting in October, operators can soon see these numbers proven on the water."
